Samsung shares its vision for a more connected world, “Bring Calm”.

At a press conference during CES 2023, Samsung and its key partners came together to explain how they plan to build a better connected world while contributing to a more sustainable future.
Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice President, CEO and Head of DX (Device Experience) Division of Samsung Electronics, kicked off the company’s CES presence by outlining Samsung’s strategy to deliver on its promise of a fully connected experience. that we are building a more sustainable future. The strategy outline presented at the press conference highlights the goal of bringing peace to our connected world so that devices and innovations can truly deliver better, more personal and more intuitive experiences. To do this, Samsung has focused on integrating devices in an integrated way and designing products that can make everyday use of technology more sustainable.

This requires time, innovation and cooperation with partners around the world. But we are determined to make it happen and we are getting there. »
Samsung integrates sustainability at all levels
To address today’s challenges facing our planet, Samsung emphasized that it continues to put the environment first by combining sustainability goals, innovative product design and strategic partnerships. Thus, by 2050, all of Samsung’s facilities will meet their electricity needs with renewable energy and emit no carbon. In the shorter term, the DX division will transition to 100% renewable energy by 2027 and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030.
To achieve its sustainability goals, Samsung explained how everyday sustainability will contribute to a healthier environment, which includes incorporating sustainability features into the company’s most popular products and services. This includes creating more sustainable products through innovative material design and energy efficiency.
“By incorporating sustainability into the product experience, we and the many people around the world who use our products can contribute to a healthier planet,” said Inhee Chung, vice president of Samsung’s Center for Corporate Sustainability. “As a result, some of our most popular products are now among our most durable.”
Samsung announced that many of its TVs and smartphones use recycled materials, including recycled plastic from discarded networks, while appliances, memory and chips in the company’s 5G radio network contribute to consumers’ energy savings. In addition, Samsung’s connected services such as SmartThings Energy and AI Energy Mode also help consumers save energy and reduce costs by reducing their impact on the overall climate.
Samsung also shared the spotlight with Patagonia, a world leader in apparel, to discuss a partnership in the fight against microplastics commonly found in clothing and released into oceans, lakes and rivers through laundry. Vincent Stanley, Patagonia’s Philosophy Director, explained how the two companies developed a new wash technology called the Less Microfiber Cycle, which is now integrated into Samsung washing machines, reducing microplastic rejection by 54% during the wash cycle.
Meanwhile, James Kwon, ENERGY STAR product manager for Electronics at the Agency (EPA), announced that Samsung’s SmartThings Connected Home Experience is Samsung’s first smart home energy management system to achieve the prestigious SHEMS ENERGY STAR certification. Samsung also continues to collaborate with various stakeholders as part of its sustainability efforts. In particular, it joined the Carbon Trust and other technology leaders to develop the industry’s first specification to measure, calculate and decarbonise emissions associated with connected devices when used by customers.
A connected home and life based on ease of use
Samsung has detailed its plans for the connected experience now and in the future. During the company’s press conference, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings Jaeyeon Jung highlighted how features like SmartThings Home Monitor and SmartThings Pet Care bring convenience to the experience of managing and delivering alerts for anything unusual for people and pets. Enabled by Samsung Smart TV, these services are one of the many ways Samsung and the SmartThings connected platform are creating an even smarter home.
A key part of this vision is improved interoperability, allowing consumers to connect more of their devices, whether Samsung or partner brands. As the industry tries to unlock a new level of compatibility through the Matter smart home standard, Samsung has declared its commitment to this philosophy. It was one of the first brands to adopt SmartThings Matter and Samsung is a founding member of the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA).
Also at the CES press conference, Samsung announced its latest smart home innovation with the SmartThings Station – the first product to feature Matter support from the start. It’s a convenient new way to launch SmartThings experiences at home and make it easy to interact with connected devices. The SmartThings Station transforms Samsung’s wireless charger into a smart hub that can naturally transform your home with a simple click.
The focus on connected experiences has extended to the unveiling of new partnerships, including the announcement of an expanded collaboration with Philips Hue. Jasper Vervoort, senior vice president and general manager of Philips Hue, discussed a new way to sync content from Samsung TVs to Philips Hue lighting via the Philips Hue Sync TV app, which can be downloaded from the App Store on Samsung TVs. This is the first solution to synchronize the lighting and content of Samsung TVs without additional equipment.
With more connected devices than ever, Samsung also detailed how innovations in security and privacy will play a key role in building connected device ecosystems. It takes device security experiences to the next level with the Samsung Knox Matrix solution, which will conveniently and securely sync credentials across devices while protecting sensitive data.
The related experience also applies to travel. Harman’s Marcus Futterlieb revealed the two companies’ proposed plans to bring greater intelligence, customization and convenience to the experience (ICX). At the heart of this effort is Harman Ready Care, which uses a machine learning algorithm to process data from the vehicle’s sensors to measure driver drowsiness and distraction, and offers personalized interventions to reduce risk and improve the latter’s well-being.
Vision of the future
Samsung also showcased next-generation innovations and technologies that leverage the latest artificial intelligence (AI). Experiences made possible by space AI, like JetBot AI+, lay the groundwork for better in-home experiences specific to the dimensions and environment of your space.
In addition, Samsung previewed Relumino Mode, which will come to select 2023 Samsung Neo QLED 8K and 4K TVs this year, to make viewing content possible for people with visual impairments. Relumino mode highlights edges, improves contrast and colors so content is clearer and easier to follow. Samsung also showcased a new pair of Relumino glasses that debuted at CES 2018 as part of the C-Lab project’s startup accelerator program, along with a mobile app to make the viewing experience more enjoyable and personalized.
