What you need to know before installation
A new iPhone operating system is available. Here’s everything you need to know about iOS 16: compatible iPhones, what’s new…
Like every year, Apple announced the new version of its operating system for iPhone at WWDC 2022: iOS 16. From compatible smartphones to new features and availability, here’s everything you need to know about this update.
iOS 16 release date and time
After months of public beta, iOS 16 is finally here. Announced at WWDC, this version is available from September 12, 2022.
Traditionally, updates for Apple products are available from 19:00 in the French capital. However, it is possible that the servers will be saturated during this launch and you will have to wait a bit to enjoy better conditions.
Which iPhones are compatible with iOS 16?
Here is the complete list of iPhones compatible with iOS 16. Note that some devices such as the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, 6s and 6s Plus or the first generation iPhone SE are no longer supported.
In short, Apple’s software monitoring remains exemplary compared to the standards we know on Android. For example, the iPhone 8 dates back to September 2017, so assuming it continues to receive patches until September 2023, it’s almost six years away from an update.
How to install iOS 16?
Before any manipulation, we advise you to backup your iPhone. Your iPhone should also be running the latest update by now (15.6.1). Also check that the iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network: the update weighs several gigabytes and it would be a shame to exclude it from your cellular plan.
Here’s how to update iPhone to iOS 16 after it’s done:
- meeting at Parameters On iPhone, tab General;
- Click Software update. After a few seconds, the block will prompt you to download iOS 16;
- Click Download and install. Your iPhone will then ask you to enter your code and accept the Terms and Conditions;
- After a longer or shorter time, the iPhone will restart to install the update. All you have to do is wait.
Of course, you won’t need to go through this procedure when iOS 16 is released as a public version. All you need to do is install iOS 16 like any other update on your iPhone by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
What’s new in iOS 16?
Even if we are far from the bunch of new features offered by iOS 15, iOS 16 certainly includes some new features, starting with the most important one: the ability to customize the lock screen.
Lock screen: Is iOS “androidizing”?
The eternal debate between iOS guarantors and Android fanatics (if it still exists) often boils down to the same topic: which customization options are more important on Android. And even if it doesn’t matter, Apple decided to “revolutionize” the lock screen.
Now it’s quite possible to change the style of the clock by applying color filters or add some pretty well thought out widgets. You can also save several different lock screens depending on the uses and even associate them with concentration mode. It is very comfortable.
Still on the lock screen, note that notifications are now located at the bottom. They should also include small animations so that they will be updated regularly. Apple showed some examples during WWDC 2022, such as the arrival of Uber or the match score that will be updated live.
iMessage
One of the apps getting the most upgrades is iMessage. You can now edit or send a message within 15 minutes of sending it. Note that up to five changes are possible.

The only limitation: your interlocutor must also have iOS 16. It is also possible to mark a conversation as unread and thus keep a small bubble next to it.
With SharePlay, you can also share the latest episode of your favorite series or a piece of music with your friends for remote commenting. Content is transparently synchronized between all recipients.
Concentration
The concentration mode is getting better and more functional. You can map the lock screen to each focus mode and simply switch between them to find the widgets that best match what you’re looking for at the moment. You can allow or block notifications from specific apps or people you choose.
Apple apps also get their own Focus mode. For example, it is enough to filter your emails and avoid receiving professional emails on your days off.
Photo and video
Last year, Apple introduced the ability to extract text from any image. Now also available in videos. iOS 16 also offers interesting elements that can be removed from an image, such as the number at the bottom left of the image.

Another fun little addition: you can automatically crop an object in a photo by holding your finger down on it. It can be a person, an animal or even an inanimate object. For example, we tried ourselves with a boat.
And also…
Other small interesting additions deserve attention. It is now possible to quickly correct the text written by voice dictation without even having to press a button to restart the dictation.
We can also mention a few improvements to the Map that will add more detailed maps. Another small point of convenience is that security updates now happen in the background.
